Foundation
The Cult of the Hacks was founded in late 2001. There are two commonly stated reasons for this.
- Facing increased pressure and mindful of the need to maintain a memory of the past, it was formed as a method of mutual support, and to provide continuity.
- Someone [1] accused it of existing, and we liked the name.
Continuation
Since its founding, whatever the original reason, CotH has continued to provide a level of indirect support (or at least something to laugh at between crises) to hacks under pressure. It aims to provide strong links between its members, so that all have the benefit of knowledge from the past to supplement the archives, and can use this knowledge to prevent (or at least deter) the repetition of old mistakes. New mistakes are far more interesting, after all.
