The Cult of the Hacks exists to unite and support all hacks, wherever they may be. It was founded in 2001 as a means of encouraging good communication between hacks, and the retention of knowledge important to us. Also, someone accused it of existing, and we thought it was a good idea and created it.
Membership of the Cult is open to all hacks, on an undefined basis. There will probably never be a formally agreed definition of what a hack is, and even informally agreed definitions are difficult to find.
There are a number of definitions of 'hack' around in common usage. They're all wrong, with any overlap with the correct definition almost entirely coincidental. If you're looking up the definitions in a dictionary, then remove 'almost' from the previous sentence.
If you think you might be a hack, you could take the test. It won't tell you if you're a hack or not, but it might provide you with some amusement. (Health warning: Taking this test seriously may damage your credibility).
CotH's current membership is largely made up of people currently or previously associated with the University of Durham. We're reasonably certain that can't be the only place that hacks are found, on the other hand we haven't found any others yet. We admit to not having looked too closely.
